Video doorbells and CCTV systems have become increasingly popular, helping people see who is at their door and providing additional peace of mind. However, if you are a council tenant or leaseholder, there are some important rules you need to be aware of before installing one.
If you are considering installing a video doorbell, CCTV camera, or any similar security device at your home, you must obtain permission from the us before carrying out any installation work, you can apply for permission online via our online form.
This is because alterations to your property require approval and must not affect the safety, security, or structure of the building.
If permission is granted, your device must be positioned so that it does not capture images or recordings of communal areas, shared spaces, neighbouring properties, public footpaths, or roads.
As the owner of the device, you are responsible for ensuring that any recordings are made and stored lawfully and that the privacy rights of others are respected. In some circumstances, video recordings may be subject to data protection legislation and privacy laws. Information and guidance can be found on the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) website.
If you live in a flat your front door may be a certified fire door. Fire doors are specially designed to help protect residents in the event of a fire and must not be altered or damaged, you should not drill into, screw fixtures onto, or otherwise modify a fire door or its frame to install a video doorbell or camera. Any unauthorised alterations may compromise fire safety and will result in repair or replacement costs being recharged to you.
If you are unsure how a device can be fitted safely, please contact us for advice before carrying out any work.
There are many simple and effective ways to help keep your home secure:
• Always lock doors and windows when you leave home or go to bed especially on the ground floor.
• Ensure communal entrance doors are kept closed and secure and do not allow people you do not know into communal buildings.
• Keep sheds, garages and all out buildings secure.
• Store keys away from doors and windows.
• Keep valuable items out of sight where possible.
• Consider property marking and security products to help protect your belongings.
• Join your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme if there is one.
