🔥 Fire Safety at Home
Fire is dangerous — but you can help keep safe by:
- Smoke alarms – they warn you early
- Fire doors – they slow down flames and smoke
- Escape routes – keep hallways and exits clear, with lights if needed
🏠 In Shared Homes (HMOs)
Landlords must:
- Provide safe ways to escape
- Test fire alarms and safety equipment regularly
- Make sure everyone knows what to do in a fire
🚨 If There’s a Fire
- Raise the alarm – tell others
- Close doors behind you
- Get out, stay out, and call 999
🍳 Kitchen Safety
- Chip pans and cooking fat cause many fires
- Keep a fire blanket in the kitchen — know how to use it!
⚠️ Gas Safety
Landlords must:
- Get gas appliances checked every year by a Gas Safe engineer
- Give tenants a copy of the Gas Safety Certificate
If you smell gas or think there’s a leak:📞 Call 0800 111 999 (24 hours)
Watch out for:
- Yellow or orange flames
- Strange smells
- Marks around gas fires or heaters
🧯 Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide is deadly and hard to detect — no smell, no taste, no colour.
It’s now required by law to have a carbon monoxide detector near every gas or solid fuel appliance.
You can buy detectors from British Gas or DIY stores.
⚡ Electrical Safety
- Only use qualified electricians (e.g. NICEIC or NAPIT)
- Don’t overload sockets
- Keep wires away from water and walkways
- Buy second-hand appliances only from trusted dealers with safety checks
- Keep heaters away from things that can catch fire
- Hot water thermostats should not go above 54°C to avoid burns
🪑 Furniture Safety
Furniture in rented homes must meet fire safety standards.
Check labels — be careful with old items.
