Tendring District Council formally adopted the Revised Essex Coast Recreational Disturbance Avoidance and Mitigation Strategy (RAMS) on 26 June 2026. This Strategy replaces the Essex Coast RAMS adopted on 13 November 2020.
The Essex Coast RAMS Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) adopted in 2020 was withdrawn by the Council on 26 June 2026 following adoption of the revised RAMS. A Technical Advice Note (TAN) will be published later in 2026 to provide guidance on the implementation of the adopted RAMS, including the application of mitigation requirements and developer contributions.

The Essex Coast Recreational Disturbance Avoidance and Mitigation Strategy (RAMS) delivers mitigation necessary to avoid likely significant effects from the in-combination impacts of residential development across Essex. The Strategy seeks to protect the European sites along the Essex Coast from adverse effects on site integrity arising from increased recreational pressure.
The Essex Coast RAMS applies to all new residential developments within the identified Zone of Influence where there is a net increase in dwelling numbers.
The Strategy identifies a comprehensive programme of strategic mitigation measures, funded through developer contributions from residential development schemes.

To provide the project with a clear identity and raise awareness of the importance of the Essex coasts internationally protected habitats, the Essex Coast RAMS is delivered in partnership with Bird Aware Essex Coast. Bird Aware aims to raise awareness of the protected birds that visit and overwinter on the Essex coast each year.

The Essex Coast RAMS applies to all new residential development within the Tendring District that results in a net increase in dwelling numbers.
The RAMS tariff is £476 per net additional dwelling, effective from 1 August 2026.
