What is the difference between Council Housing and Housing Association owned properties?

Both are considered social housing, however, there are key differences

•Council Houses are owned directly by the Council while Housing Association properties are owned by a not-for-profit organisation that specialises in social housing.

•Both offer secure housing however the rent is slightly higher in Housing Associations than it is for Council owned properties.  Typically Housing Associations are 20% below the private rental market rates while Council owned properties are 50% below the private rental market rates.

•Housing Associations are national organisations with stock across the country and tend to have a much larger stock of housing than Local Councils
