Home Safety

🏡 Stay Safe at Home

Every year, thousands of people in the UK are hurt or even die in accidents at home.
People who rent homes may be more at risk.

Here are some things to check to help keep your home safe:

✅ Safety Checklist

  • Are carpets and mats safely fitted and not slippery?
  • Is there good lighting on stairs and steps?
  • Are handrails fitted on stairs and landings?
  • Are windows safe for children and easy to open in an emergency?
  • Is glass in low windows made of safety glass?
  • Do stairs or floors look unsafe?
  • Are cookers fitted with safety brackets to stop them tipping?
  • Are hot items like kettles kept away from children?
  • Are fire doors, smoke alarms, and emergency lights working?
  • Is there a fire blanket in the kitchen? Do you know how to use it?
  • Can you leave the home quickly in a fire without needing a key?
  • Do gas appliances work properly? Any strange marks or smells?
  • Have you seen the Gas Safety Certificate from your landlord?
  • Are electrical wires safe and not near water or walkways?
  • Are sockets overloaded or giving shocks?
  • Is furniture fire-safe?
  • Do young children, older people, or those with disabilities live or visit? Do they need extra help?

👥 Who Is Responsible?

Even if you rent your home, it’s important to check for safety yourself.
Your landlord must also make sure the home is safe — especially in shared homes (HMOs).

If you’re worried, tell your landlord or managing agent.
