All new homes at Carnarvon Terrace set to be earmarked as social housing

All of the homes planned for an exciting new development in Clacton town centre are set to be used as social housing.

Planning permission was granted last year for Tendring District Council’s Carnarvon Terrace development, which will feature 28 contemporary homes, a new multi storey car park, and a mixed use community space including creative workspaces.

Initial plans proposed a mixture of socially rented and privately owned homes.

However, TDC’s Cabinet has now agreed in principle to progress the project with all homes being made available for social rent.

When built, they would be managed by the council’s internal housing team.

TDC Cabinet Leader Mark Stephenson

Councillor Mark Stephenson, TDC Leader, said: “We know residents want us to provide more council properties in the district, and this decision will help us deliver more high-quality, sustainable homes for the people who need them.

“Everyone deserves a safe, warm home for themselves and their families and this decision will help create these for more people.

“The Carnarvon Terrace development is very exciting and is a key part of the regeneration of Clacton, making it an even better place for people to live, work and visit.”

The development forms part of the Clacton Civic Quarter proposals, which also include Essex County Council’s plans to redevelop Clacton Library into a state of the art learning and training hub.

Both are key elements of a multi-million-pound government-funded programme set to make considerable improvements to Clacton Town Centre.
