A former student of The Princes Youth Theatre has returned to his roots to inspire the next generation of performers, after starring in MJ the Musical.

Chris Gopaul, who began his theatrical journey at the Clacton-based youth theatre, recently led an energetic and inspiring workshop for current students.

Now a seasoned West End performer, Chris has starred in hit shows including Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, and most recently, MJ the Musical.

During his visit, Chris shared his professional experience in acting, singing, and dancing, using material from MJ the Musical to give students a taste of life on the big stage.

His passion and generosity left a lasting impression, offering a real insight into the dedication and drive needed to succeed in the performing arts.

The experience didn’t stop there. Students later travelled to London’s Prince Edward Theatre to see Chris in action, where he plays Quincy Jones and Tito Jackson. Watching someone who once stood where they are now perform under the West End lights was a powerful and emotional moment for many.

“The students were completely captivated,” said Melissa Wenn from The Princes Youth Theatre. “Chris’s journey is a reminder that with hard work and belief, anything is possible.”

Councillor Gary Scott, Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture and Heritage, added:

“Chris’s return shows just how far local talent can go.

The Princes Youth Theatre is a launchpad for young people with big dreams, and we’re proud to support it.”

Chris’s visit has reignited ambition among the students, many of whom returned with fresh motivation to pursue careers in the arts. The Princes Youth Theatre is proud to celebrate Chris’s achievements and grateful for his continued connection to the place where it all began.
