Standards were raised and wreaths laid as veterans and residents marked the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
The Service of Remembrance, which commemorated the anniversary of VJ Day, took place in the Memorial Gardens on Marine Parade West, Clacton, on Friday (15 August) at 11am.
The sombre service was hosted at the town’s War Memorial by the Clacton branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) and was supported by Tendring District Council (TDC).
It was conducted by Reverend David Lower and the service included a reading from Council Chairman Bill Davidson, who represented the district in paying tribute to those who served in the Far East.
Councillor Davidson said: “VJ Day is a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice shown by those who served in the Pacific theatre of the Second World War.”
“It is an honour to take part in this service and pay tribute to the brave individuals who gave so much for the freedoms we enjoy today.”
Councillor Dan Casey, who is also President of Clacton RBL and the council’s Armed Forces Champion, added: “On behalf of our committee and members, I would like to thank all the Forces organisations, standard-bearers, and members of the public who joined us to mark this important occasion.
“Your presence ensures that the legacy of those who served is never forgotten.”
“Also a special thank you to WW2 veteran James Goss, who is 100 years old and also his lovely wife Gloria who attended the service, it made the day.”
