Residents and nature lovers across Tendring are being encouraged to join the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend.

Tendring District Council (TDC) once again supported the national event by hosting a birdwatching session alongside Frinton in Bloom for schoolchildren at Crescent Gardens in Frinton.

The activity formed part of the council’s community engagement commitment linked to its Green Flag award‑winning sites.

Now in its 46th year, the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s largest wildlife survey, helping build a nationwide picture of how Britain’s much‑loved garden birds are faring.

This year’s count takes place from Friday 23 January to Sunday 25 January, and residents are being invited to spend just one hour recording the birds they see in their gardens, balconies or local green spaces.

Councillor Adrian Smith, TDC Cabinet Member for Environment, said the Birdwatch is an ideal moment to slow down and appreciate the wildlife around us.

“Taking part in the Birdwatch is a simple way to reconnect with nature at a time of year when we all need a lift,” he said.

“You don’t need special equipment or expert knowledge — just an hour and a bit of curiosity. Every sighting helps build a clearer picture of how our local bird populations are changing.

“So I’d encourage everyone to get involved during the weekend and discover which feathered visitors are sharing your garden.”
