Ribbons are adorning a memorial gardens as part of a poignant display marking this year’s Baby Loss Awareness Week.

Tendring District Council (TDC) is once again showing its support for the week, which runs from 9 to 15 October, which – in it’s 23rd year – aims to unite those affected by baby loss, offering a space for remembrance, reflection, and awareness.

For the seventh year, the council has hosted a moving ribbon display in the Clacton Seafront Memorial Gardens, which includes a dedicated memorial tree. Pink, blue and white ribbons, alongside crocheted hearts and teddy bears, adorn the garden fence — each one representing a baby who is deeply missed and forever loved.

The display is organised by Maria Gormley, Supporter Care Coordinator for Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, and a 2023 Pride of Tendring winner.

Councillor Bill Davidson, Chairman of Tendring District Council, attended the memorial and shared his reflections: “I was honoured — even though it was a tug at the heartstrings — to represent Tendring District Council at the Baby Loss Awareness Week memorial.

“A particularly moving moment for me came when an older gentleman approached to ask about the ribbons — his sincerity and emotion to all who have experienced such unimaginable loss was truly touching, reminding us how shared empathy can unite us all.

“My heartfelt thanks go to Maria Gormley for her dedication and care in supporting families and raising awareness during this important week, year after year.”

Maria added: “Each year it is a real privilege to honour all the precious babies by adding a ribbon to the ribbon display, it means so much to the local community to have their babies remembered in such a poignant way.”
