Residents across Tendring are being encouraged to dive in and make a splash for charity as Swimathon returns to the district this month — marking the event’s 40th anniversary.
Clacton Leisure Centre and Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles, both run by Tendring District Council (TDC), will once again host the nationwide fundraising challenge, which supports Cancer Research UK and end‑of‑life charity Marie Curie.
This year’s Swimathon sessions will take place at Clacton Leisure Centre on Friday 20 March, 6.30pm–9.30pm, and Saturday 21 March, 2pm–5pm, and at Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles on Saturday 21 March and Sunday 22 March, 1pm–5pm.
To celebrate Swimathon’s 40th year, participants can take on a range of challenges, including team events over 1.5km, 2.5km and 5km, as well as individual challenges of 500m, 1.5km, 2.5km, 5km and the ultimate Triple 5k.
Councillor Mick Barry, TDC’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Public Realm, encouraged swimmers of all abilities to get involved.
“Swimathon is the world’s biggest annual fundraising swim, and it’s fantastic to see our local pools playing their part in this milestone year,” said Cllr Barry.
“Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or taking on your very first challenge, every length makes a difference in supporting two incredibly important charities.
“I hope to see lots of local people signing up and getting behind this brilliant event.”
Last year’s Swimathon took place at more than 450 venues across the UK and raised over £1million, bringing the national total raised since the event first launched in 1986 to more than £50million.
The virtual MySwimathon challenge — which participants can complete in their own time — runs until 31 March.
