Clacton Town Hall proudly flew the Red Ensign yesterday (Wednesday, 3 September) in recognition of Merchant Navy Day 2025.
The Red Ensign, the official flag of the UK Merchant Navy, was raised during a brief but poignant ceremony held at the offices of Tendring District Council (TDC). The event served as a tribute to the vital role played by Merchant Navy personnel past and present.
TDC Chairman Councillor Bill Davidson led the ceremony with a commemorative reading.
Councillor Davidson said:
“Merchant Navy Day is an opportunity for us to publicly express our gratitude to the men and women who serve in the Merchant Navy.
Their courage and commitment have been instrumental throughout our history—from perilous wartime voyages to ensuring the steady flow of goods and supplies that support our economy today.”
As the flag was raised, attendees observed a minute’s silence to honour those who have lost their lives in service to the Merchant Navy.
