Work to refresh part of the much loved promenade next to Brightlingsea’s award winning beach is set to begin next month.

Tendring District Council (TDC) will be improving the surface of the promenade around the paddling pool area, giving this popular stretch of seafront a cleaner, more even finish.

The work will also help address long-standing wear and tear, with the new surface gently sloping from the seawall towards the beach to improve drainage.

Councillor Mick Barry, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Public Realm, said: “This upgrade is great news for Brightlingsea’s seafront and for everyone who enjoys spending time here.

“By improving the look and feel of the promenade, we’re creating a space that’s cleaner, more welcoming and even better suited to families, walkers and beachgoers.

“We know this has been a longstanding concern for local residents and councillors, and we're pleased to have responded and secured the investment needed to carry out these important works.”

The improvement works are due to start in October, with the scheme expected to be completed in November, although timings may vary depending on tides and weather conditions.

As part of the work, the height of the prom will be raised slightly to make it easier for people to move around and to improve accessibility for all visitors.

Councillor Adrian Smith, Cabinet Member for Environment – which includes responsibility for Coast Protection and Engineering – said: “This project is a great opportunity to give one of Brightlingsea’s busiest seafront areas the upgrade it deserves.

“By resurfacing whole sections rather than patching defects, we can improve drainage and create a finish that’s smoother and easier to maintain.

“Brightlingsea’s Blue Flag beach is a real source of local pride, and these improvements will help to build on that status.”

Access to sections of the promenade may be temporarily restricted at times while the work is carried out.
