Work is under way on a major revamp of Clacton seafront that will bring three underused buildings back to life and create a new home for creativity and culture on the Essex Sunshine Coast.

Tendring District Council (TDC) is revitalising an iconic curved shelter, former public toilets and a storage hut that overlooks Kings Promenade as part of a wider £20million regeneration scheme.

The overhaul will provide new opportunities for businesses and creative organisations in a prominent location above one of Clacton’s most popular beaches.

The scheme will build on private investment that has already taking place around Clacton Pier and the Martello Lounge, while the Beach Patrol base below the buildings is also being refurbished to support the team ahead of the 2027 season.

Gary Scott, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture and Heritage, said: “Clacton is a vibrant, family-friendly destination and this project will help to bring even more culture and creativity to our seafront.

“We are taking buildings which have been underused for years and giving them a new purpose in one of the most prominent locations on the Essex Sunshine Coast.

“Together with the investment taking place nearby, this project will help create an even more vibrant and attractive destination for residents, visitors and businesses alike.

“It is one of a number of projects showing the real progress being made through our £20million regeneration programme.”

The site perimeter will be decorated with a public art commission and hoarding designs inspired by Clacton’s proud heritage and exciting future before the end of the year.

During the building works, a small section of pathway close to the buildings has been closed off, however, step free access remains available from the Memorial Gardens to the promenade level.

Re-Gen UK Construction Ltd is delivering the refurbishment work on behalf of TDC.

TDC’s planning committee gave the green light for the plans in April, with the project being funded by TDC’s Community Regeneration Partnership with the Government.

The agreement is seeing £20million worth of projects come to life in Clacton and Jaywick Sands including funding shopfront improvements for local businesses, community transport improvements and exciting new facilities at Clacton Leisure Centre.
