Audiences attending Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at Clacton’s Princes Theatre this Easter half-term are being invited to support a heartfelt fundraising effort, as Princes Youth Theatre turns the show pink in aid of two much-loved company members.
The much-anticipated production runs from 9 to 12 April, bringing the beloved musical to the Tendring District Council-run venue with high-flying magic, cherished songs and a fully engineered ‘flying’ Chitty car that promises to delight audiences of all ages.
Alongside the excitement on stage, the Youth Theatre has launched “Chitty in Pink”, a special fundraiser created in response to an incredibly difficult few months for the company. Two members of the Princes Youth Theatre family — Lexi, 14, and 12-year-old Mia — have been seriously unwell, receiving treatment at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, for a stroke and lymphoma respectively. The initiative aims to raise funds to support their families with travel, accommodation and other ongoing challenges.
During the run of the show, the theatre will feature splashes of pink throughout, including pink lighting at the front of the building and in the auditorium before and after performances, as well as some bold pink touches from cast and creative team members – with musical director Neil Whitfield dying his hair bright pink. Every flash of colour represents solidarity, love and support for the two young performers and their loved ones.
On stage, the cast is led by Albie Oxley as Caractacus Potts, with Lucas Dew and Jessica Cox as Jeremy and Jemima, and Jess Burden as Truly Scrumptious. They are joined by a vibrant ensemble, senior and junior dancers, and a host of memorable characters.
Melissa Wenn, Principal of the Princes Youth Theatre, said: “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has always been a show full of warmth, imagination and heart, and this production means more to us than we can put into words.
“Going pink is our way of coming together as a theatre family — to support Lexi and Mia, to show their families that they are not alone, and to celebrate the incredible spirit of our young performers. We’re so proud of everyone involved, both on and off the stage.”
Based on the much-loved 1968 film, the show features favourite songs including Toot Sweets, Hushabye Mountain and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, making it a magical Easter treat for the whole family. Tickets are available via www.princestheatre.co.uk or from the Box Office on 01255 686633. Donations to the Chitty in Pink fundraiser can be made at the theatre during the run of the show or via JustGiving at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/neil-whitfield-2.
