Clacton on Sea’s iconic Princes Theatre is celebrating its 95th birthday this month, marking almost a century at the heart of the town’s entertainment, heritage and community life.

First opened in April 1931, the Princes Theatre has played host to generations of audiences, welcoming millions through its doors for pantomimes, comedy, music, drama, public events and celebrations.

Nestled within the Grade II listed Clacton Town Hall, the venue remains one of the town’s most recognisable and much loved landmarks.

Designed in 1926 by architect Sir A Brumwell Thomas and built on what was once a potato field, the theatre was officially opened by Prince Arthur of Connaught and originally seated 1,250 people.

Even more intriguingly, hidden old electrical outlets revealed a handwritten note dated 3 February 1993, signed “Ron Jessop” and marked “Prince Theatre”. Believed to have been left by an outside contractor, the message offered a fleeting connection with someone who worked behind the scenes more than 30 years ago.

In response, the current theatre team created and sealed a time capsule under the stage, containing the original note and a new message for future generations reading: “Hello from the past to the future.”

General theatre manager Kai Aberdeen said the 95th anniversary was a celebration of both history and people.

“Ninety five years is a remarkable milestone, and what makes it special isn’t just the building — it’s the stories,” said Kai.

“From performers stepping onto the stage for the first time to families returning year after year, the Princes Theatre has been part of so many lives in Clacton.

“Even the discoveries beneath the stage remind us that this place has always been full of character, creativity and human moments.

“We’re incredibly proud of our past, but we’re just as excited about the future — continuing to bring brilliant entertainment, shared experiences and new memories to Clacton for generations to come.”

The venue has evolved over time — adapting to modern audiences while preserving its historic character — and today seats 820 and stages more than 150 performances and events each year.

Refurbishment work in 2024 uncovered fascinating reminders of the theatre’s rich past — literally beneath the stage. While carrying out maintenance following a busy season, theatre staff confirmed long held rumours of a large trapdoor beneath the stage leading to the cast dressing rooms, as well as discovering old cigarette packets believed to have been left behind by the original builders.

As part of its 95th birthday celebrations, the Princes Theatre is inviting audiences past and present to share their favourite memories of the venue, with a special anniversary giveaway offering one lucky winner a £95 theatre voucher.

Run by Tendring District Council, the Princes Theatre continues to play a vital role in the cultural life of Clacton on Sea — proving that even at 95 years young, the show most definitely goes on.
