Council leaders are backing the development of four brand new Football Foundation PlayZones across Tendring.
Tendring District Council is supporting the development of the vibrant activity hubs at Clacton Leisure Centre, Bathhouse Meadow in Walton-on-the-Naze, Cliff Park in Harwich, and Crossways in Jaywick Sands.
These modern facilities are designed to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to get active, connect with others, and enjoy healthier lifestyles.
Councillor Mick Barry, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Public Realm, welcomed the plans.
“This is a landmark investment in the health and happiness of our communities,” he said.
“These PlayZones will be more than just places to play - they’ll be places to thrive.
“While we are in the early stages of developing these facilities, we hope they will be spaces where people can be active, feel connected, and enjoy life.
“Whether it’s a kickabout with friends, a fitness class, or just a safe space to move and have fun, these hubs will help us build a stronger, healthier Tendring.
“This project aligns with the council’s Sport and Activity Strategy, which was adopted last year, and Our Vision — TDC’s corporate plan — by promoting pride in our area, improving quality of life, and raising aspirations.
“It will also help reduce antisocial behaviour, support mental wellbeing, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.”
The PlayZones were chosen following extensive community consultation and will be shaped by local voices to ensure they reflect the needs and aspirations of residents.
The Council will also work closely with local organisations to develop activity programmes and explore future management options for the sites, ensuring they are well-used and sustainable.
It is expected that planning applications will be submitted later this year and construction could begin in early 2026, with all four PlayZones due to open by late spring 2026.
To move the project forward, £40,000 of the Council’s match-funding contribution will be committed immediately to support detailed design work and the submission of planning applications.
“This exciting development builds on the momentum of Tendring’s first-ever Sports and Activity Conference, held in May, which brought together clubs, coaches, and wellbeing champions to launch a new era of community-focused physical activity across the district,” added Councillor Barry.
TDC is encouraging residents to get in touch to secure slots for sports and activities at all new PlayZones by emailing the dedicated PlayZones email at PlayZones@tendringdc.gov.uk.
