Demolition work on an eyesore former town centre car park has been completed.
The old Milton Road Car Park in Dovercourt has now been fully dismantled marking another key milestone in the £9 million regeneration of the town centre which is being spearheaded by Tendring District Council (TDC).
Next year, a modern, 23-space car park will be built on the site featuring electric vehicle charging facilities and decorative railings inspired by Dovercourt’s iconic Leading Lights.
Councillor Ivan Henderson, TDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “This is a major part of our plan to create a modern and vibrant town centre.
“I know residents, visitors and businesses have been keen to see action on this site, and with demolition now complete, the focus can now turn to building a new car park which will be a huge benefit to everyone.”
The Milton Road redevelopment is part of a wider £9million investment in Dovercourt, which includes £6.7million in government funding alongside contributions from TDC and Essex County Council (ECC).
The regeneration programme has also seen Harwich Library transformed and reopened in a project led by ECC.
Other upcoming changes include plans from TDC to build new social housing on disused land in Victoria Street transforming two other eyesore sites into affordable homes, plus significant improvements to the public realm and other green spaces.
Local businesses have also benefitted from funding from the High Street Accelerator programme to fund improvements for their shopfronts. Money from the scheme has also been invested on new CCTV cameras to reduce anti-social behaviour, a new website which also serves as a database for businesses and organisations and new street light banners to give the town a distinctive branding and identity.
