Work to improve Wellesley Road Car Park in Clacton is due to begin this month as Tendring District Council continues to invest in parking facilities across the district.

The town centre car park will close for two weeks from Monday, 14 September, while resurfacing takes place and new pay-and-display machines are installed, helping to keep the well-used site in good condition for shoppers, residents, local businesses and visitors.

The £95,000 investment is part of the council’s wider work to maintain welcoming car parks that are safe and accessible with more sites gaining national recognition through the police-backed Safer Parking Scheme.

Councillor Mick Barry, TDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Public Realm, said the investment in car parks shows the council’s commitment to facilities used by residents and visitors every day.

“Parking is important to residents, whether they are popping into town, visiting the seafront, supporting local businesses or spending time with family and friends,” he said.

“By carrying out these improvements after the busy summer period, we have kept disruption to a minimum while making sure Wellesley Road Car Park remains safe, clean and well looked after for the people who use it.

“Tendring continues to have some of the lowest car parking charges in Essex, and we are proud to reinvest in facilities that residents, businesses and visitors rely on across the district.

“We are also proud to continue to fund the Householder Parking Permit — a scheme that is almost unique to Tendring. Now back in use after the summer break, the permit gives residents a real benefit — helping them use our car parks and enjoy everything our beautiful district has to offer.”

Eleven more council-run car parks have recently achieved Safer Parking Scheme awards, which recognise facilities that meet high standards for safety, cleanliness, lighting and management, bringing the total number of award-winning sites in Tendring to 32.

The latest sites are Tower Street in Brightlingsea, Agate Road and Elm Grove in Clacton, Lower Marine Parade and West End Lane in Dovercourt, The Quay and Wellington Road in Harwich, Ipswich Road in Holland-on-Sea, Jaywick Beach, and Church Road and High Street in Walton-on-the-Naze.
