New sports grants set to inspire schools, clubs and communities to get active in Tendring

A fresh wave of funding is being launched in Tendring to help local people get moving, get involved, and get inspired through sport and physical activity.

Tendring District Council (TDC) is launching three exciting new grant schemes, thanks to the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), to support schools, clubs, and community organisations across the district.

Whether it’s boosting after-school activities, bringing the coastline to life with beach sports, or helping young people access clubs regardless of financial barriers, these grants are designed to make a real difference.

The three grant schemes include:

  • Enhancing sport and activity provision in local schools - Grants of up to £500, or £1,000 for exceptional proposals, are available to schools and clubs to run extra-curricular activities that encourage more young people to get active, especially in areas with fewer existing opportunities.
  • Developing a coastal sport and activity events programme - Up to £500 is available to support a vibrant calendar of beach-based sports events, from volleyball and rugby to multi-sport festivals – all aimed at celebrating Tendring’s stunning coastline and encouraging participation at all levels.
  • Inclusive access to sport clubs - Grants of up to £300 can be awarded to help young people join local clubs, with funding paid directly to the club on their behalf. This ensures that no child misses out on the chance to take part due to financial constraints.

These initiatives form part of TDC’s wider UKSPF programme, which has seen the council awarded £563,028 for 2025/26 to support community, business, and skills development projects.

Councillor Mick Barry, TDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Public Realm, said: "We’re thrilled to be launching these new sports grants, which are all about opening doors and creating opportunities for people to get active, have fun, and feel part of something positive.

“Whether it’s a school starting a new after-school club, a beach buzzing with activity, or a young person joining their first team – these are the moments that build healthier, happier communities.

“I encourage anyone with ideas or proposals to apply and help us make Tendring an even more active and inclusive place to live."

Applications for the sports grants are expected to open on Friday 13 June, with full details, eligibility criteria and forms available at www.tendringdc.gov.uk/content/ukspf.

All projects must be completed by 31 March, 2026.
