The date for this year’s Tour de Tendring cycling challenge has been announced – with a new slot towards the end of the summer.

The popular event successfully returned to the cycling calendar last year after a break of four years.

This year, the Tour de Tendring will return to the district’s beautiful coastline and countryside on Sunday, 14 September.

Mick Barry, Tendring District Council’s (TDC) Cabinet Member for Leisure and Public Realm, said he was delighted that it would be taking place again this year.

“We were thrilled to get the event back on the map in 2024 and give over 300 riders the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful district,” said Councillor Barry.

“The Tour de Tendring is not just a fantastic opportunity to get active - it's a chance to immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes of our district, from the picturesque countryside to the vibrant Essex Sunshine Coast.”

TDC worked in partnership with Bike Events and supported the event financially to get it restarted last year – building on the positive outcome the company will be operating independently this year.

Councillor Barry, who completed the 20-mile course last year, added: “Our initial funding has paved the way for a sustainable future for the Tour de Tendring, and we wish them every success.

“With the Harwich Skate Jam happening on the same day as the Tour de Tendring, just like last year, we're gearing up for an exhilarating day filled with activities for everyone."

Euan Scott-Batey, from Bike Events, said the inclusive ride offers 60 or 20-mile circular routes, alongside a six-mile family ride.

“It's perfect cycling country with quiet roads, low hills and views to the sea,” he said.

“And with a six-mile family ride, it's a great opportunity for the whole family to saddle up and join in this hugely enjoyable ride.

“Starting and finishing in Dovercourt, along the way we’ll visit St Osyth with its historic Martello Tower, Great Bentley - which boasts the biggest village green in England – and Great Oakley, its roots stretching back to the Domesday Book and, of course, Clacton - famous for its pier and gardens.

“Taking place alongside the annual Skate Jam, you’ll be able to unwind with refreshments and entertainment back at the starting/finishing point at Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles in Wick Lane - and also top the ride off with a free swim in the swimming pool.”

Alongside the cycling event, Maverick Skateparks and Harwich Town Council will again be hosting the thrilling Skatepark Jam at Harwich and Dovercourt Skatepark, behind the leisure centre from 12-4pm. It will include music, demonstrations, competitions and prizes.
