Tendring District Council (TDC) has agreed to dispose of the former Council Offices site at Weeley via auction.
The decision, made at a meeting of the Cabinet on Friday, 25 July, follows a comprehensive review of the site’s future in light of the Council’s current priorities and the need to ensure best value for taxpayers.
The site has remained vacant for some time, incurring ongoing costs of approximately £65,000 per year.
Peter Kotz, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Assets and Community Safety, said: "Cabinet has agreed to proceed with the freehold disposal of the former Weeley Offices site, starting with an auction process.
“This approach provides a clear and transparent route to sale, reduces ongoing costs, and supports our commitment to financial sustainability and openness."
The Council had previously explored a housing-led redevelopment of the site, but negotiations with the preferred bidder were discontinued earlier this year due to delays and legal complexities.
To ensure the best possible outcome, the Council will now take steps to maximise interest in the auction, including direct engagement with previously interested parties.
"This decision reflects our pragmatic approach to managing public assets responsibly, while ensuring we achieve the best consideration reasonably possible for the site," added Councillor Kotz.
The auction date and further details will be announced in due course.
