Council secures partial closure order to protect Dovercourt residents from anti-social behaviour

Tendring District Council (TDC) has secured a partial closure order on a property in Dovercourt following persistent reports of anti-social behaviour linked to the address.

The order was granted by Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court after the council presented evidence showing that disorderly or criminal behaviour had taken place – or was likely to continue without action.

The court also recognised the significant nuisance caused to neighbours and agreed that intervention was necessary to prevent further disruption.

Under the Closure Order, no one is allowed to enter or stay at the property until 12 May, except for the tenant and TDC as the landlord.

Anyone who breaches the order without good reason could face serious penalties, including a fine or up to 51 weeks in prison.

The decision follows numerous complaints from neighbours and a coordinated response from the council’s Community Safety, Housing and Legal teams.

Magistrates praised the council’s evidence as “comprehensive” and granted the maximum three month order.

It is hoped the action will deter individuals responsible for the ongoing issues from returning to the property, giving nearby residents much needed respite.

Councillor Mark Stephenson, Leader of TDC, said: “Taking this action was absolutely necessary to protect neighbours and our tenants from the anti-social behaviour taking place around this property.

“This is the first time TDC has applied for a closure order, underscoring our commitment to protecting the safety and wellbeing of our residents — particularly those who are vulnerable or who simply deserve to feel secure in their own homes.

“I want to give particular thanks to our Community Safety, Housing and Legal teams for their hard work and determination in bringing this case forward.

“Their teamwork has been vital in helping our residents feel safe in their own community.”
