Veterans, councillors and services organisations as well as local residents will mark the 82nd anniversary of the Normandy Landings at a service this Saturday (6 June).
Tendring District Council (TDC) and the Clacton branch of the Royal British Legion will host a moving service of remembrance to commemorate the anniversary of D-Day, the start of the Allied liberation of Nazi-occupied France during the Second World War.
The poignant service will take place at Clacton War Memorial, located in the Memorial Gardens on Marine Parade West, on Saturday, 6 June 2025 at 11am.
Led by Reverend David Lower, the commemoration will include a reading by Councillor Ann Oxley, Chairman of Tendring District Council, and will bring together veterans, armed forces representatives, standard bearers, and members of the public in a shared act of remembrance.
“This massive amphibious operation marked the start of the end of the Second World War in Europe when thousands of brave soldiers came ashore – and dropped from the skies – to free the continent from the tyranny of Nazi rule,” Councillor Oxley said.
“The service is an opportunity for everyone to take a moment and reflect upon – and honour – the bravery and sacrifice of all those who fought for our freedom.”
Councillor Dan Casey, TDC’s Armed Forces champion, added: “I would encourage everyone to attend and show their support.”
