Swimmers across Tendring have helped raise thousands of pounds for charity after taking part in this year’s Swimathon, held at Clacton Leisure Centre and Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles.
The nationwide fundraising event — celebrating its 40th anniversary — saw residents of all ages and abilities dive into the pools over the weekend of 20–22 March to raise money for Cancer Research UK and end of life charity Marie Curie.
Sessions ran at Clacton Leisure Centre on Friday 20 March and Saturday 21 March, and at Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles on Saturday 21 March and Sunday 22 March, with dozens of participants completing distances ranging from 500m to the challenging 5km and Triple 5k swims.

Team events also proved popular, with groups taking on 1.5km, 2.5km and 5km challenges together.
Councillor Mick Barry, Tendring District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Public Realm, praised everyone who took part.
“Seeing so many local people come together for such an important cause has been fantastic,” said Councillor Barry.

“Whether swimming a few lengths or several kilometres, every participant played a part in raising vital funds for two charities that support so many families.
“Our centres are proud to have contributed to Swimathon’s milestone year.”
Last year’s Swimathon raised over £1million nationwide, and organisers expect this year’s total to push the overall amount raised since 1986 well beyond the £50million mark.

For those unable to attend in person, the virtual MySwimathon challenge — allowing swimmers to complete their distance in their own time — continues until 31 March. Residents can sign up now at swimathon.org.
