Residents are being reminded to cast their votes in next week’s record-breaking UK parliamentary by-election in Clacton.

Voters in the Clacton constituency will go to the polls on Thursday, 13 August, to choose who will represent them in Parliament.

A total of 34 candidates are standing in the by-election - a record for a parliamentary election. The previous record was 26 candidates, set at the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in July 2008.

Ian Davidson, Acting Returning Officer for the Clacton by-election, said: “This is a historic by-election for Clacton, with a record number of candidates standing in a UK parliamentary election, and I would urge everyone who is eligible to make sure they have their say.

“Elections are a vital opportunity for residents to choose who represents them. If you are voting at a polling station, please remember that you must bring an accepted form of photo ID with you. This could include a passport, driving licence, Blue Badge, older or disabled person’s bus pass, or another approved form of identification.

“Staff from across the council have been working hard to prepare for this unusual and high-profile poll, including the practical challenges that come with such a large ballot paper and the level of interest in the by-election.

“Our priority is to make sure the by-election is run properly, fairly and securely, and that every eligible resident who wants to vote is able to do so with confidence.”

Thereare 51 polling stations booked across the constituency, where almost 70,000electors will be eligible to vote. Another 10,000 electors vote by post and postalvotes are continuing to be returned by them. Polling will take place between 7amand 10pm on Thursday, 13 August.

The deadline forthose wishing to register to vote has now passed.
