Tendring residents reminded of changes to waste and recycling collections over the festive season

Tendring residents are reminded that waste and recycling collection days will change slightly over the festive season.

There won’t be any collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, or New Year’s Day, so please check your updated schedule to make sure your bins are out on the right day.

You’ll find the updated collection dates below, and they’re also shown on your household collection calendar:

On the week of December 29, households which usually see their waste collected on the Monday and Tuesday will see it collected one day later, while those which usually have it collected from Wednesday to Friday will see their collection two days later, with the usual Friday collection that week taking place on the following Monday (5 January).

For the week beginning Monday, 5 January 2026 collections will be a day later than usual, with Friday collections taking place on Saturday (10 January).

Collections resume as normal from Monday, 12 January 2026.

For households’ first black bin collection after Christmas each home can put out an extra two black bags of side waste, in recognition of the additional waste and recycling generated over the festive period.

For Christmas trees St Helena Hospice is again running its Treecycle service across most of Tendring, covering the CO7, CO11 to CO16 postcodes. Households in these areas can book for their tree to be collected on the weekend of 9-11 January in return for a donation to the charity. To find out more and to book visit sthelena.org.uk/how-you-can-help-us/events-and-challenges/tree-cycle-2026.

Households subscribed to the garden waste brown bin service are reminded there are no collections over the Christmas and New Year period, but they can leave a Christmas tree out with their bin for their first collection afterwards. The collection day of the week for garden waste is unchanged.

Residents are also reminded that they can recycle old clothes, as part of a separate service run by Essex Textiles, by placing their blue textile recycling bag next to the red recycling box.

Adrian Smith, TDC Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We’ve worked closely with Veolia to keep any disruption to a minimum over the festive period.

“We know Christmas and New Year celebrations can lead to extra waste, so we’re asking residents to recycle as much as possible.

To help, households can put out up to two additional black bags alongside their bin for the first collection after Christmas.

“The revised collection dates follow the same pattern as previous years, making it straightforward for everyone.”

People can find updated information on TDC’s Christmas services web page, which has full details of seasonal changes to services across the authority at https://www.tendringdc.gov.uk/pages/christmas.

In an emergency which requires TDC’s assistance residents can contact the council’s Control Centre on 01255 222022, available 24/7.
