Council leaders in Tendring have backed a new Essex-wide strategy aimed at improving air quality across the county.

Tendring District Council (TDC) has officially adopted the Essex Wide Air Quality Strategy 2025–2029, which will see local authorities in Essex work collaboratively under the banner of EssexAir.

The new strategy sets out a shared vision and practical steps to reduce pollution, promote cleaner transport, and raise awareness of indoor and outdoor air quality.

Although Tendring does not have any Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) - zones where air quality falls below national standards - the council is committed to working collaboratively with partners across Essex to make the best use of shared expertise and resources.

Councillor Adrian Smith, TDC Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Air quality isn’t something we can take for granted—it impacts every aspect of daily life. From the school run to caring for loved ones, the air we breathe matters.

“By adopting this strategy, Tendring is backing practical action that protects health and supports cleaner, safer communities.

“Working with councils across Essex means we can share expertise and tackle the causes of pollution together, ensuring progress that benefits residents now and in the future.

“We’re committed to championing our local environment and working with our partners to improve quality of life for our residents.”

The strategy sets out a series of collective actions across Essex, including promoting public transport, supporting the shift to low-emission and electric vehicles, installing green infrastructure where it can make the biggest difference, and securing funding for measures to cut harmful emissions — particularly in areas with poorer air quality.

The strategy was shaped through a public consultation held from January to March, was approved by Essex County Council in September, and published on the EssexAir website in October.

Tendring District Council’s Cabinet formally adopted the strategy at its meeting on Friday, 14 November. For more information, go to https://essexair.org.uk.
