Tendring District Council (TDC) has been recognised nationally for its animal welfare work after receiving two honours in the RSPCA’s PawPrints Awards 2026.

The annual awards celebrate councils and public bodies that go above and beyond to protect animals and support responsible ownership.

TDC received a Gold PawPrint for Animal Activity Licensing for the second time, recognising its work to maintain high standards among animal-related businesses through effective regulation.

This includes inspecting and licensing businesses such as dog breeders, kennels, catteries, pet sellers, dog day care providers, horse hiring businesses and animal exhibitors.

The Council was also awarded a Silver PawPrint for Housing, recognising its work to promote responsible pet ownership through tenant guidance and welfare partnerships.

Councillor Adrian Smith, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “These awards are welcome recognition of the care and commitment shown by our teams in protecting animal welfare across the district.

“Good licensing is an important part of animal welfare, and this Gold PawPrint reflects the work being done to support responsible businesses and ensure animals are properly protected.

“I am proud to see this work recognised nationally and grateful to everyone whose efforts have helped us achieve this standard.”

Councillor Andy Baker, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Pets are an important part of many tenants’ lives, and this Silver PawPrint recognises the work being done to support responsible pet ownership in our homes.

“By providing clear guidance and working with welfare partners, we can help residents care for their animals responsibly while making sure pets and people are supported in the right way.”

The RSPCA PawPrints Awards recognise animal welfare work across the local public sector in England and Wales, celebrating effective practice in areas including Animal Activities Licensing, Stray Dog Services, Housing, Contingency Planning and Kennelling.
