Joint Statement from the Leaders of North East Essex Councils: Essex County Council proposal for Local Government Reorganisation
“The recent announcement of Essex County Council’s proposal for Local Government Reorganisation has generated significant interest.
“We intend to carefully review all the proposals before deciding which one to fully support.
“Among the business cases expected to be submitted to the Government in September are a three-council proposal, a four-council proposal, and a five-council proposal.
“Colchester City Council has already publicly expressed its support for the five-council proposal, however we, like others, await the complete evidence base for each proposal and will collaborate with partners across Greater Essex to support their development.
“What is important is that we take the opportunity which Local Government Reorganisation presents to maximise the benefits and improve services for all our residents and businesses, however the new boundaries are drawn.
“As councils representing the North East of Essex, we are committed to ensuring our districts and city are in the best possible position, recognising both the opportunities and challenges of our places.
“We continue to work particularly closely across the three councils on this and other joint working opportunities to plan for the future, recognising that each of the current proposals envisaging us working together.
“Ultimately, this is a decision for Ministers, and we are committed to engaging constructively in the process to ensure the voices of residents in our three areas are heard.”
Councillor Graham Butland, Leader of Braintree District Council
