The Government announced on Monday (7 September) it was withdrawing its decision to proceed with Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Essex and to review the LGR programme.

In a joint statement, Tendring District Council, Colchester City Council and Braintree District Council said: “We are aware of the Government’s announcement that following legal advice, it is withdrawing its current decision on Local Government Reorganisation for Essex and other areas, and we await further information and formal confirmation.

“In March, the Government confirmed its preference to replace the current 15 two-tier councils in Essex with five new unitary authorities. As with any process of this kind, the next steps remained subject to the necessary legislation being passed by parliament.

“Our focus throughout has been on securing the best possible outcomes for the residents, businesses, staff and communities we serve, whatever shape future arrangements may take.

“Our councils will continue to work constructively together with Essex County Council, and other partners, to ensure the needs, services and communities of our areas are best met. This ongoing work remains important. It is strengthening relationships, improving shared understanding and helping us respond to our community’s needs, while also informing better services for our residents.

“We understand the Government intends to confirm that local elections in May 2027 will go ahead on existing council boundaries.

“We will consider the detail of any further information from Government when it is available and will continue to work in the interests of our residents, businesses, staff and communities.”
