Residents across Tendring will continue to benefit from a free Householder Parking Permit, as Tendring District Council (TDC) confirms the popular scheme will run for another year.
Introduced in 2012, the permit helps residents save money by allowing free parking after 11am at most council‑run car parks for much of the year, while encouraging people to support local shops, town centres and visitor destinations across the district.
The announcement comes as Tendring’s car parks receive growing national recognition, with 30 sites now holding the prestigious Park Mark award for safety, cleanliness and accessibility.
The Council has also secured the Park Access EV disability‑friendly award, currently held by only a small number of councils nationwide.
Alongside maintaining free parking for residents, the Council continues to invest in its car parks, with more than £400,000 of improvement works planned, including upgrades at Bathhouse Meadow car park in Walton‑on‑the‑Naze and Wellesley Road car park in Clacton town centre.

Councillor Mark Stephenson, Leader of TDC, said the scheme remained a clear example of the council putting residents first.
“At a time when household budgets continue to be under pressure, this scheme provides real, practical support for people across Tendring,” he said.
“Free parking helps residents go about their daily lives, supports our town centres and local businesses, and encourages people to enjoy everything our district has to offer.
“That’s why we’re pleased to be continuing it for another year.”
Councillor Mick Barry, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Public Realm, said the permit was a benefit residents should make the most of.
“We know parking is an important issue for our residents, which is why we continue to fight to protect free parking on our seafronts and fund the Householder Parking Permit — a scheme that’s almost unique to Tendring,” he said.
“It gives residents free parking after 11am for most of the year, and we’ve been proud to keep it running.
“We’re proud of the services we provide to residents, including our award-winning car parks – so please make the most of the permit — it’s a real benefit that helps residents support local businesses while enjoying everything our beautiful district has to offer.”
Existing permit holders do not need to renew, as permits will continue automatically. Permits are electronic, meaning no paper permit is issued.
The scheme covers one vehicle per household, with additional permits available to purchase. Permits are not valid during July and August, although options are available for residents who wish to extend cover during those months.
The permit is valid at most Tendring District Council pay‑and‑display car parks, excluding The Naze, Holland Haven and Frinton and Walton Swimming Pool car parks, and does not apply to council housing or civic office car parks.
