Tendring District Council (TDC) is encouraging residents to join Keep Britain Tidy’s 11th Great British Spring Clean by pledging to pick one bag of litter - or more.

The council is backing the charity’s annual initiative which asks people to pick litter from the district’s streets and public spaces.

The campaign, which runs from 13 to 29 March, calls on residents across Tendring to show they love where they live by taking part in the mass action litter pick.

Residents are asked to pledge on the charity’s website to pick one bag or more of litter from streets, parks, beauty spots and beaches in order to protect our vibrant communities and precious wildlife habitats.

The charity reports that last year 95 per cent of participants agreed that they felt they had made a difference to their local area – and 88 per cent of people who took part in the Great British Spring Clean agreed they feel part of a national movement that is taking action to tackle litter

Adrian Smith, TDC Cabinet Member for Environment, said the council works hard year-round to keep our public spaces clean and pleasant for everyone – and encouraged residents to join the initiative.

“Tendring’s community spirit continues to shine, and we’re incredibly proud of how our residents work together to keep our district looking its best,” he said.

“Our stunning Blue Flag beaches and much loved Green Flag parks are special places for both people and wildlife, and every litter picking effort helps protect them for the future.

“Whether you’re joining an existing group or organising your own clean up, your actions make a real difference to the place we all call home.

“We’re here to support you with equipment and collection services, so please get in touch if you’d like to get involved.

“Caring for our environment and helping residents take pride in their communities remains at the heart of everything we do.”

The Great British Spring Clean brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to make a difference to their local environment.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, said: “We are so grateful for the amazing support from Tendring District Council.

“The Great British Spring Clean is a fantastic way for councils to support residents to really show their pride in where they live, and connect with like-minded people, while taking serious and immediate action to protect the environment on their doorstep.

“We are humbled to see our army of Litter Heroes volunteers carrying out these acts of kindness to make the planet a cleaner, safer place for our future generations.”

For those interested in organising a litter picking event, TDC has a limited supply of branded Great British Spring Clean bags, available on a first come, first served basis – and can also arrange for the disposal of collected waste. About the Great British Spring Clean

The Great British Spring Clean is the country’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign, now in its 11th year. In 2025, 485 local authorities and town and parish councils took part, with 108 MPs also pledging support.  Litter Heroes across the country picked more than 462,000 bags of litter last year. This year’s campaign is made possible thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, media partners Bauer Media Outdoor, Magic Radio and The Mirror, and supporting partners KFC Mars Wrigley, McDonald’s, Nestlé, Pepsi MAX and Walkers.
