Residents across Tendring can now recycle glass, cartons and plastic pots from home as a new recycling service gets underway.
From Monday, 5 October, households can put glass bottles and jars, cartons (Tetrapak) and plastic such as yoghurt pots into their green recycling box for kerbside collection.
The change is part of a new waste and recycling service from Tendring District Council (TDC), delivered by contractors Veolia, which aligns with national changes introduced through the government’s Simpler Recycling scheme.
Adrian Smith, TDC Cabinet Member for Environment, encouraged people to make use of the service that will see the additional materials recycled.
“This is simpler for residents – we will now collect more recycling from people’s homes, including glass bottles and jars, cartons and plastic pots,” Councillor Smith said.
“Collecting more materials means more recycling and less waste, which is part of our commitment to champion our local environment and ensure residents’ can take pride in our services, including waste and recycling.”
Each household has received an extra green recycling box to use for the additional materials, but any similar container can be used to present recycling for collection. Residents who live in flats can also place these additional materials in their communal recycling bins, and in due course signage on those bins will be updated.
Residents in Point Clear are reminded that their waste and recycling collection day changes this week (week commencing 5 October), with most moving from a Thursday to a Tuesday collection day.
Meanwhile households in Elmstead Market, Frating and Great Bentley will have two green recycling weeks in a row – black bins, green box items such as glass, plastic pots and tins, and food waste – before alternating again, as part of the roll-out of the new service.
Glass can be placed in with other materials, with households asked to be mindful of the weight of boxes which have to be manually handled by collection teams.
However, broken glass should not be put out for recycling; while plastic film cannot be collected until 2027.
Residents can visit the council’s website for further information about the changes and how to use the new service, or to check their recycling calendar and collection day.
