The newly elected Chairman of Tendring District Council (TDC) has expressed her honour at being elected to the role.

Walton ward councillor Ann Oxley was voted in as Chairman of TDC at the authority’s annual meeting last night (Tuesday, 19 May).

Having served as Vice-Chairman for the past year, Councillor Oxley steps into the shoes of outgoing chairman Bill Davidson; who was paid tribute to by councillors from across the council chamber for his work.

Councillor Davidson thanked members and council staff for their support and encouragement during his time in office, during which he raised money for local good causes, and added that he had been “privileged” to visit communities right across the district during his term of office.

Speaking to fellow councillors, Councillor Oxley said: “I have done some of the most amazing things in my life, but this is a great honour.”

Councillor Oxley added that she would determine her chosen charities ahead of the next full council meeting, and would be welcoming Reverend David Lower back as her chaplain; she also thanked Cllr Davidson for his service over the past year.

Councillor Carlo Guglielmi, who represents the Lawford, Manningtree and Mistley ward, was elected to serve as Vice-Chairman for the coming year, and added it was his honour to also take up the position.

In addition to presiding over TDC full council meetings, the Chairman of the council plays a ceremonial role, representing the council and district at various civic and community events.
