Essex storyteller and Cultural Ambassador James Lawrence, also known as Man About Country, has joined forces with Tendring District Council (TDC) to launch an inspiring new campaign celebrating the Essex Sunshine Coast.

Combining a series of engaging social media films with immersive, guided Story Walks, the initiative will shine a spotlight on Tendring’s hidden gems, rich heritage and distinctive coastal landscapes.

Launching at the end of June, with free Story Walks beginning in July, the campaign offers both residents and visitors a fresh opportunity to explore Tendring through its folklore, heritage and lived experiences. Each walk, led by James Lawrence, is limited to 30 participants to create an intimate and engaging experience, blending local history, wildlife insight and engaging interpretation.

James said: “Essex is a county that constantly surprises you. Too often it’s reduced to a single story, but in truth it’s a place of endless depth, beauty and character.

“Tendring, in particular, offers some of the most distinctive settings anywhere in the county – you just have to know where to look.

“Through these walks, I want people to reconnect with the land beneath their feet and the stories that have shaped it over centuries.

“From ancient woodland to windswept coastline, every location holds layers of history and human experience waiting to be uncovered.

“This project is about more than just storytelling – it’s about pride, identity and gaining a fresh appreciation for what makes this corner of Essex so special. My hope is that people will come away with a renewed sense of wonder, and a deeper connection to Tendring and its place in the wider story of Essex.”

Councillor Ivan Henderson, TDC Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, Regeneration and Tourism, said the campaign would shine a light on the Essex Sunshine Coast’s treasures.

“This campaign is a fantastic way to celebrate the Essex Sunshine Coast and encourage more people to discover Tendring’s distinctive landscapes, rich heritage and hidden gems,” he said.

“By celebrating the places, stories and scenery that make our district special, we can inspire both residents and visitors to explore more of what Tendring has to offer.”

Councillor Gary Scott, TDC Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture and Heritage, added: “Supporting initiatives like this is at the heart of our vision for arts and culture in the district.

“It’s about raising aspirations, opening doors and giving everyone the chance to experience something enriching, creative and memorable right on their doorstep.”

Story Walks will take place at Stour Wood, Wrabness, on 21 July, the Naze at Walton-on-the-Naze on 22 July and Jaywick Sands on 23 July.
