Major improvement plans for Clacton Leisure Centre have been given the go ahead, paving the way for significant upgrades to the site and the introduction of a range of exciting top class facilities.

Tendring District Council’s Planning Committee has approved a circa-£2million council project for state-of-the-art new sport and play facilities at the Vista Road site.

At the heart of the scheme is a new pump track, designed for BMX bikes, scooters and skateboards, which will be free to use and feature an exhilarating jump line. The facility will complement the existing Trax skatepark.

The approved plans also include a learn-to-ride area, providing a safe space for children and beginners to develop confidence on two wheels, as well as an all-new playground to replace the existing play equipment on site.

Alongside these facilities, two covered padel courts will be constructed, allowing one of the world's fastest-growing sports to be played all year round, plus two new tennis courts with additional capacity for netball use.

The facilities are expected to be open in 2027.

Councillor Mick Barry, Tendring District Council's Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Public Realm, said: “This is fantastic news for our residents and a major milestone in our ambitions to enhance leisure and recreation opportunities across the district.

“These high-quality facilities will attract more users and encourage residents of all ages to enjoy a wider range of activities. With support from the relevant governing bodies, new tennis, netball and padel programmes will offer opportunities to try something new and spend time outdoors with friends and family.

“Whether tackling the BMX jump line, learning to ride a bike or trying padel for the first time, there will be something for everyone.

“Residents—especially young people—played a vital role in shaping this project, a key ambition of our Community Sport and Activity Strategy. I am delighted that work can now move forward.”

TDC has worked alongside Alliance Leisure to develop the project, which is funded through the Community Regeneration Partnership, a £20million programme from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government supporting improvements in Clacton and Jaywick Sands.

The scheme forms part of a wider programme of improvements at Clacton Leisure Centre, including refurbished fitness changing rooms, a new low-carbon heating system and a forthcoming Football Foundation PlayZone.
