Potholes on a key road in Jaywick Sands are now being repaired after Tendring District Council (TDC) stepped in to fund emergency works.
Contractors Groupbridge are currently on site in Brooklands, an unadopted road running parallel to the seafront, following a decision by TDC’s Cabinet at the end of March to authorise repairs.
The council does not normally carry out works on private roads, and Brooklands is not maintained by any local authority. However, the decision to intervene was taken in this case due to the poor condition of the road, clear safety concerns for road users, and strong feedback from residents.
Improving Brooklands was identified as the top priority by local people during detailed consultation on how government funding for public spaces in Jaywick Sands should be used.
The works are being funded through TDC’s Community Regeneration Partnership with the Government, which aims to improve the public realm, strengthen community safety, and support access to jobs.
Councillor Ivan Henderson, TDC Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “We cannot commit to adopting the road, but we know funding these emergency repairs is the right thing to do.
“We want to make sure everyone stays safe and that people can drive along the road without worrying about damage to their vehicles.
“I’d like to thank everyone for their patience while work is carried out.”
The repairs are expected to take around a week to complete.
Residents are advised that there may be some disruption while works are ongoing. During this period, the Number 4 bus service will start and terminate at Meadow Way.
Councillor Henderson added: “We are pushing ahead with a range of projects across Jaywick Sands, not just this one.
“It’s great news that we have a strong pipeline coming forward, all guided by the priorities residents shared with us through consultation.”
