Work to tear down an eyesore town centre building to make way for new social homes has begun.
Contractors SRC Group, working on behalf of Tendring District Council (TDC), have begun the demolition of 20 Victoria Street in Dovercourt.
The area is being cleared to allow for vital new homes to be built, with dedicated parking for residents set to be constructed on the site across the road.
Councillor Ivan Henderson, TDC Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth, Regeneration & Tourism said: “I know residents have been waiting a long time for action at this site, so I am thrilled we have been able to begin this work.
“Bringing more homes to the area is a crucial part of regenerating Dovercourt town centre, but first we need to clear this derelict building in a safe and efficient way.
“This work, along with other projects under way or soon to begin, will bring real improvements to the town centre.”

The project is part of a wider £9million investment in Dovercourt, which includes £6.7million in government funding alongside contributions from TDC and Essex County Council (ECC).
As part of this programme, ECC has transformed Harwich Library, while TDC is in the middle of revamping the derelict Milton Road Car Park.
Significant improvements to the public realm are also due to begin this spring, building on the work of the Dovercourt High Street Accelerator programme which has supported town centre businesses.
