Council’s clampdown on tenancy fraud frees up homes for families in need

Tendring District Council (TDC) is continuing to take a firm stand against tenancy fraud – and its efforts are making a real difference for local families in desperate need of homes.

The council’s dedicated Counter-Fraud and Compliance Team has been carrying out audits to ensure council homes are used by those in genuine need.

These checks target properties that have been falsely claimed, abandoned or illegally sub-let – situations which not only deprive families of a home but also cost Tendring taxpayers.

Council Leader Mark Stephenson (pictured) said tackling tenancy fraud is vital to protect social housing.

“Tenancy fraud is not a victimless crime - every council property is someone’s home and a lifeline for people in our community,” he said.

“We’re proud to provide thousands of council homes to residents who value and respect them, but sadly, a small minority abuse the system, depriving families in need of a home and costing Tendring taxpayers.

“Our clampdown on tenancy fraud makes sure these homes go to the right people. Every recovered property is another chance to give someone a fresh start.

“I would like to highlight one recent case in which a mother and her young child, left homeless through no fault of their own, have been given a new place to call home thanks to the crackdown.

“The council reclaimed a property that has been fraudulently occupied and reallocated it to the family, who were in urgent need, giving them stability and security.”

Councillor Stephenson praised the team for helping to make homes available for those in genuine need.

“We take a firm line on tenancy fraud and will continue to do so,” he added.

“If you’re misusing a council property, we will catch up with you – it’s only a matter of time. And there are serious consequences for those who break the rules.

“We also urge residents to report anything they suspect; every tip helps us return homes to those who genuinely need them.
