Council leaders have renewed their commitment to fortnightly rubbish collections in Tendring.

Tendring District Council’s (TDC) Cabinet approved a revised approach for its new waste and recycling contract, aiming to keep services affordable and aligned with upcoming local government reorganisation, last week (Friday, 23 May).

The current contract, delivered by Veolia Environmental Services, covers waste collection and street cleaning and is set to expire in early 2026. TDC is now procuring a new contract to replace it.

Council leaders remain committed to fortnightly rubbish collections and expanding recycling, including kerbside glass and improved food waste services. Initially planned as an eight-year contract, the new deal will now be shortened to three years.

This change follows the government’s announcement of Local Government Reorganisation, with Greater Essex identified as a priority area. TDC is expected to be replaced by a new unitary authority.

Councillor Adrian Smith, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “I’m delighted to confirm that we remain committed to fortnightly rubbish collections in Tendring as part of the new contract.

“The new service will deliver real benefits for our residents - including new kerbside glass collection and food waste collections for more households, while there will be no reduction in street cleaning.”

Early bids for the contract exceeded the current budget by over £7million annually, prompting a reassessment to ensure financial sustainability during the transition.
