Residents are being invited to attend a commemorative service in Clacton to mark the anniversary of the end of the Falklands War.

The event, organised by the Clacton branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) in partnership with Tendring District Council (TDC), will take place at Clacton War Memorial on Sunday, 14 June at 11am.

It will honour the courage and sacrifice of all those who served during the ten-week conflict in 1982, which ended with the liberation of the Falkland Islands.

This year’s service will be led by the Chairman of the Royal British Legion, Richard Geddes, and will include the Falklands Epitaph and the laying of wreaths.

Councillor Ann Oxley, Chairman of TDC, will give a reading during the ceremony, which marks the 44th anniversary of the conflict.

She said: “This commemoration is a moment for Clacton to pause and reflect on the courage of those who served in the Falklands, and to remember those who never returned.

“It is important that we continue to mark occasions like this with dignity, ensuring their sacrifice remains part of our shared remembrance.”

Councillor Dan Casey, TDC’s Armed Forces champion, added: “We would be very pleased to see residents, veterans and local forces’ organisations come together for this service on Clacton seafront.

“It is especially important that younger generations have the chance to learn about the Falklands conflict and understand the service and sacrifice it involved.”

Clacton War Memorial is located in the town’s seafront gardens, off Marine Parade West. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
