Clacton came together in solemn remembrance on Saturday (6 June) to mark the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings, honouring the bravery and sacrifice of those who took part in one of the most significant moments of the Second World War.

The commemorative service, held at Clacton War Memorial and jointly organised by Tendring District Council (TDC) and the Clacton branch of the Royal British Legion, brought together veterans, armed forces representatives, standard bearers, councillors, service organisations and members of the public for a poignant act of remembrance.

Led by Reverend David Lower, the ceremony included prayers, the laying of wreaths, and a reading by Councillor Ann Oxley, Chairman of Tendring District Council.

“The D-Day operation marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War in Europe,” said Councillor Oxley.

“Thousands of brave soldiers came ashore – and dropped from the skies – to help free the continent from the tyranny of Nazi rule.

“Today, we honoured their courage and reflected on the enormous sacrifice made by all those who fought for our freedom.”

Councillor Dan Casey, TDC’s Armed Forces Champion, also attended the service and reiterated the importance of remembering those who served.

“It is right that we continue to mark occasions like this with dignity and respect, so the service and sacrifice of those who fought are never forgotten,” he said.

“It was heartening to see so many people gather once again to honour that memory and show their support despite the inclement weather.”

The annual commemoration offered residents an opportunity to pause and reflect on the courage, determination and selflessness of the Allied forces who took part in the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944.
