Tendring District Council (TDC) is marking the start of the seaside season with the return of its Beach Patrol teams from this bank holiday weekend (Saturday, 23 May), helping residents and visitors enjoy the Essex Sunshine Coast safely over the months ahead.
The service will be active in Clacton, Frinton and Walton, while Seafront Warden teams will be present in Dovercourt and Brightlingsea, returning in time for the schools’ summer half-term break and the beginning of the busy visitor season.
As in previous years, lifeguarded beaches will once again be clearly marked with red and yellow flags to help beachgoers stay safe while making the most of the coast.
Councillor Mick Barry, TDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Public Realm, said: “The return of Beach Patrol marks the start of another busy season on Tendring’s coastline, and we’re delighted to welcome both residents and visitors back to enjoy our fantastic beaches and seafronts.
“From half-term onwards we know our resorts will become much busier, and our teams are here to support people, offer advice and help everyone make the most of their time by the sea.
“Our Beach Patrol teams provide a visible presence on the seafront, offering guidance, first aid and practical help when needed.
“They regularly step in to prevent avoidable incidents – whether that’s advising swimmers who have drifted too far out or warning people away from rocks and groynes, which can be extremely dangerous.
“We also continue to back the RNLI’s ‘Respect the Water’ campaign and encourage people to keep water safety in mind whenever they visit the beach.
“Please follow safety advice, pay attention to beach flags, avoid swimming near piers, and be aware of tides, currents and sudden drops in the sea floor. And never swim under the influence of alcohol.
“Remember, Beach Patrol is not an emergency service – if you see someone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
Beach Patrol will operate in Clacton, Frinton and Walton most Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from 10.30am to 5.30pm, and daily during the school summer holidays.
In Dovercourt and Brightlingsea, the Seafront Warden service will be on duty from 11am to 5pm, excluding 24, 26, and 28-29 May at Brightlingsea and 24, 25 and 27 May in Dovercourt.
