Social Media - privacy notice

The purpose for this processing

Tendring District Council uses social media platforms, via corporate social media accounts, for the promotion of services, campaigns and events to provide information, encourage take up, change behaviours, and enhance the reputation of the Council.

The Council interacts with users by:

• creating a public profile which includes information on our current activities;

• sharing our photos, videos and posts;

• sharing links to content you are interested in which has been produced by third-parties (such as sharing a news article);

• connecting you with our breaking news as it happens;

• connecting you to what people are saying, doing and thinking in the District

• delivering services and support to you

The Council only processes information that could identify an individual if they provided it to us to help resolve a customer service enquiry.

Legal basis for this processing

• Article 6, 1. (e) - Processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the controller (public task).

Where you share special category information with us the following lawful basis applies to such processing:

• 9 (e) Processing relates to personal data which are manifestly made public by the data subject.

What data do we collect about you

We may collect the following types of personal data:

• Name

• Email address

• Social media handle/username and other contact information that allows us to deal with your enquiry

• Comments/opinions and images posted by you on a public social media channel that may contain personal data

• filming/video footage of you

Whilst we do not ask for and encourage you not to disclose in the public domain any sensitive special category’ personal data, such as health conditions or allegations of wrong doing, we recognise that you may choose to share this type of information. We will ensure we keep this information safe and only use what is necessary.

How long do we collect your personal data

Personal information is held for no longer than is necessary and is retained in accordance with the Council’s published Corporate Retention Schedule.

Who we share your data with

• Relevant internal Council departments

• Relevant third parties e.g. project partners for specific projects, Essex County Council, CVS Tendring etc.

If your query is forwarded to an internal Council department to follow up a service request, complaint or enquiry, you should refer to the privacy notice for that service. These are available on the Council’s website  - Service Privacy Notices

We will only share your information with other third parties or use it for another purpose if we are required to do so by law, for example by court order or to prevent fraud or other crime.

We do not transfer your personal data outside of the UK.
