Garden Waste Information
You can find all you need to know about the garden waste collection service here. If your question isn’t included, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01255 686877 and we’ll be happy to help.
We offer residents a subscription service for garden waste. It costs £75 (£25 one-off joining fee which includes a brown wheeled bin and £50 annual subscription fee). Your bin will be emptied fortnightly 25 times per year.
Please note there are no garden waste collections over Christmas and the New Year. If you have a real Christmas Tree we can collect on your next collection date after the Christmas period if placed out next to your brown garden waste bin.
Please put your brown bin on the boundary of your property closest to the highway by 7.00am on your collection day. We do not accept extra garden waste, all waste should be put in your bin loose and the lid should be closed. We can empty a bin up to 80 kg.
We make all reasonable efforts to empty your bin. However if there is waste that is stuck, frozen or contaminated we may not be able to empty it.
If you are moving to another property within the district and wish to continue the brown bin service, please contact us (email email@example.com or call 01255 686877)
This is a non-refundable service. To keep costs down, we cannot refund any part of your subscription if you cancel part way through the year.

How to renew
If you are already subscribed to the scheme, an annual reminder will be issued approximately one month before your current years’ service is due to expire.
If you subscribed using a direct debit payment, we will simply notify you each year that we are collecting a further yearly subscription and your service will continue uninterrupted.
If you subscribed using any other payment methods, we will contact you in advance when your years’ subscription is nearing completion inviting you to renew. Should you wish to renew, payment can be made using the methods above, to ensure your Garden Waste collection service continues uninterrupted.
If you do not renew your subscription by your expiry date, the service will be suspended and the Council will recover the bin(s).
If you want to change or cancel your subscription, please contact us (email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01255 686877).
Frequently asked questions
Q. What happens if the bin gets damaged/broken/stolen?
Please contact us and replacement bins will be provided when appropriate.
Q. Can I have a larger bin or an additional one?
You can have an additional bin for £75. There is no restriction on the number of brown bins each property can have and are prepared to pay for.
Q. Will you offer assisted collections?
If all the residents of the property are elderly or disabled and have difficulty presenting the bin to the boundary of the property, assisted collections will be available. Please contact us for details.
Q. Will customers on benefits or pensioners get a discount?
Unfortunately there are no additional finances to subsidise the service and it has to be self-financing; the charges involved reflect the actual cost of the service.
Q. Can we pay in instalments or through our council tax?
No the payment is paid annually through a variety of methods. Please see above.
Q. What is the size of the bin?
It is a 240 litre wheeled bin.
Q. When will it launch in my area?
The service is now available to all residents in the Tendring District.
Q. Does it mean we can’t use the green bags anymore?
There are currently no plans to withdraw the green bag service although this will be reviewed once the new service has been rolled out throughout the district. It should be noted that garden waste collected in green bags is sent to landfill.
Q. Will the Recycling Centres for Household Waste (RCHW) no longer take Garden Waste?
The RCHW are operated by Essex County Council who decide which materials are accepted. We have not been informed that there are any plans to stop taking garden waste.

Yes, although one resident will be responsible for payment to TDC.

The government has set Tendring targets for recycling which we need to achieve. Therefore the Council has banned garden waste from black sacks with the aim to divert it from landfill to being composted.

Tendring District does not offer this service.
Q. When would be my renewal date?
Your renewal date is from the first scheduled collection following the delivery of your garden waste bin.

As the collections are suspended for a two week period, the first collection after the Christmas/New Year period will be on your normal collection day.
Q. Will you collect my real Christmas tree?
We will collect your real Christmas tree as part of the garden scheme; just put it out next to your bin on your collection day.
