Plans to build two three-bedroom homes behind properties in Bradfield have been halted as unacceptable backland development.
Tendring District Council (TDC) has refused planning permission for the scheme in Station Road.
The aim was to build the bungalows at the back of numbers 1 and 2 Station Road using an existing drive.
TDC decided that the proposal was an intrusion into the open countryside and was not environmentally sustainable.
It would also not meet the criteria for an acceptable backland development.
There was also opposition from Bradfield Parish Council and one further letter of objection.
