Charging unit at High Street Car Park

Tendring District Council (TDC) has installed its first electric vehicle charging point in the High Street car park in Clacton.

Owners of electric vehicles will be able to use the service free of charge, provided they have either paid for a parking space, or have parked with a householder’s permit during the designated times, which is anticipated to make the scheme cost neutral.

It is hoped the new charging point will prove popular and be the first of many throughout the District, providing an incentive for electric vehicle drivers to visit the District.

The new vehicle charging point is a fast charging point that should fully charge most vehicles within roughly 3 hours from a flat battery.

Nick Turner, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Commercialisation, Seafronts and Parking said he was pleased that TDC was making a positive contribution to issues such as climate change.

“I hope that this charging point will be the first of many across all our car parks in the Tendring District and that visitors to the District will make the most of local facilities while their vehicles are recharging.”

Benefits of electric cars include zero emissions, which in turn improves air quality and reduces local air pollution; reduction of carbon dioxide from road transport; and low running costs - a full charge will cost around £2 to £3 and will give a typical range of 100 miles.
