Planning Inspector dismisses appeal over application for home near listed church

Wednesday, 7 February, 2018

A Planning Inspector has backed Tendring District Council’s (TDC) refusal to allow planning permission for a new home close to a listed building.

Principal Homes Ltd had applied to the Council in November 2016 to build a “sizeable” four-bedroom home on the site of the former Great Holland Nurseries site in Church Lane.

TDC refused the plans in January 2017 due to the impact the new building would have on the neighbouring 15th Century Grade II*-listed All Saints Church.

The proposed home would be within the Great Holland Conservation Area, and although some new homes have been built elsewhere on the former nursery site, they are located close to where the previous buildings were and not so close to the church.

An appeal was launched by Principal Homes over the decision.

However a Planning Inspector has this week dismissed the appeal, ruling that the limited public benefits of the home did not outweigh the damage to the significance of the church.
