Official launch of Dovercourt Skatepark

Tuesday, 10 April, 2018

A long awaited skatepark is gearing up for an opening jam with a whole host of prizes and competitions to be won.

The free event, hosted by Harwich Town Council (HTC), kicks off from 12pm on Saturday 14 April at the site next to Dovercourt Swimming Pool and runs until 4pm, and will include professional demonstrations and an MC.

Local organisations are supporting the event and include Home Start, Teen Talk, Police and Fire Cadets, St Johns Ambulance, the Ark Family Resource Centre, as well as main contractors Maverick, who have designed and constructed the new Skatepark.

Several years ago a group of skaterboarders asked HTC to refurbish the site which they claimed was dangerous in the winter or when the metal ramps become slippery after it rains.

HTC has put £100,000 towards the project with the remaining funding secured by partners including Tendring District Council, Tesco Bags of Help, Police Fire Crime Commissioner for Essex (PFCC), Essex County Council and Lottery Funded Sport England.

The Council was granted planning permission for a major overhaul on the existing skate park site off Lower Marine Parade last August and building work started in earnest in September.

The Skate Park incorporates a series of elevations and dips to suit fans of skateboarding, bikes, scooters and in-line skates no matter what their age or ability.

Jo Henderson, chairman of Harwich Town Council’s skatepark working party, said:  “This is the most expensive project ever undertaken by Harwich Town Council and it has been a remarkable team effort to bring it to completion.”

“It would not have been possible without our funding partners who have been incredibly supportive.  We now have a wonderful new facility and we hope it brings a lot of pleasure to a lot of people.”
